The following tracks are the most impressive songs by Trance and House DJ's in the last few years. While it remains difficult to objectively rank any form of music, these are marked by their innovation by both vocalists and producers, and designate more than just the popularity among the charts. Ultimately, these are all tracks which are not to be missed by fans of Trance and House music.
#1. Oceanlab – Lonely Girl ( Gareth Emery Remix)
It is quite simply astonishing just how much this song can be improved upon without altering its original essence. The original song embodies a relaxed soothing tone, just as one would expect from the combination of vocalist Justine Suissa and Trance legends Above and Beyond (collectively known as Oceanlab).
Emery’s mix on the other hand conveys the force and driving melodies that transform “Lonely Girl” into an epic anthem of progressive trance, expertly manipulating soothing vocals with a synthesis of energetic melodies and rhythm. The initial echoes of the chorus that builds up as the beat progress and as the soothing backdrop fades in and out in tune with the vocals.
The sheer power of Gareth’s beats coupled with the harmony of Justine Suissa’s vocal style place this track into a class all on its own, seamlessly unifying two styles of trance that seem to be in complete opposition with one another.
The fluidity with which Emery blends his distinct style and the entrancing calm of Suissa’s voice are as impressive as the innovative beat itself. All in all, this is a tough song to beat, and while the vocals are as notable as the beats themselves, it is the continuity of the song itself that are so striking, as the production itself seems flawless; a tough feat to achieve when mixing a song so unlike one’s own style. It seems Gareth Emery has done it again.
2. Gianlucca Motta ft Molly – Not Alone (Deadmau5 Remix)
Deadmau5 is one of the largest growing names in house music, almost to the point where anything he touches becomes a hit. In this case, however, the most striking feature on this track is undoubtedly the clarity of the vocals.
The progression of the intro builds up only slightly before the lyrics begin, and from this point on the effect is utterly mesmerizing. The clarity of the singing seems to ring in ones ears as the beat wraps around the words, building up only long enough to drop the subtle basslines once more.
The simplicity with which Deamau5 composes his songs is indicative of his own style, and while the notes may grow a bit repetitive after a time, this song by no means grows stagnant. The music and lyrics complement each other perfectly, and the gentle tone of the vocals lingers long after each note is sung, perpetually ringing in the echoes of each note. Moreover the words are recited almost poetically to the effect that this track is suitable for almost any emotive expression and rapidly grows to an unforgettable favorite.
3. IIO- At The End (Scumfrog Remix)
The hypnotizing power of Nadia Ali ’s voice has warranted another discussion all on it’s own (see above article) but this rendition of At the End is nothing short of a masterpiece. With the sensual remnants of Ali’s vocals chanting in the echoes, the remix transforms this slow upbeat song into a melodic trance mantra that implores one to shut their eyes and take it all in.
The echoes of each verse hang suspended until after the next verse begins as the beat wanes in and out in tune with them. Nadia Ali’s vocal talent is undeniable, and it is no easy feat to locate a beat to complement her melody, but with the Scumfrog remix there may be a contender.
4. Robbie Rivera ft Justine Suissa – Float Away
While there are many remixes paying tribute to this track, in this case the original remains untouched as none can even hold a candle to it. The beat is utterly unique all on its own, and the intro is so ecstatic and uplifting that one is immediately taken in by it. The following segment only grows more impressive; as the vocals of Justine Suissa come about as the beat slows to deliver a powerful chorus interplayed with a seductive humming.
In contrast to the aforementioned tracks, the track has far less progression, but the unique note and tempo of the beat and the highly sensual narrative nature of the lyrics provide an entrancing effect which is just overwhelming.
5. Tenishia ft Kirsty Hawkshaw - Invisible
Relative newcomers to the trance scene Tenishia have had absolutely no trouble in making their name known. Their style is uniquely their own, and the upbeat progression of their songs take no breaks. From the moment this track begins, it is continuously evolving and changing; amazingly Hawkshaw’s vocals are able to adopt this characteristic on their own, resulting in an extraordinary tune that could come from no one else.
The intro is rather slow, but rapidly builds into a hypnotizing beat that just as quickly fades once more to accompany the pitch of the vocal melodies that linger with each note. The duo play back and forth with the vocals until the latter half of the song where the unmistakable power of the beat drops once more. All in all, this is a track that never grows old, and like many of their songs is indicative of a new evolution of trance music.
